Mexico’s claim to the Amerian SW was weak at best. The Pope gave it to Spain. Spain gave it to the US. The only claim of possession Mexico had to the land was a series of around 20 churches or so. Plus perhaps 20,000 Mexicans or so. And no government of any consequence. Who were already greatly outnumbered by the Americans.
