As a child, my family was one of the first to camp at the newly opened primitive camp ground on Edisto Island, SC. I had the privilege of encountering these majestic turtles and even saw one laying eggs. As a young adult I encountered hatchlings returning to the sea on a late summer visit to the island in the mid 80’s, but even then, Edisto was already well on it’s way to being developed, and the Edisto of my childhood was gone. I hate to see the same thing happen to Daufuskie, and I honor the people fighting for the turtles.

Well, Roger, after all this time! I feel like you brought me back to the island I remember, and all the good times I experienced while there. Thank you.

I am here on Daufuskie, with my Dad and the turtle patrol, getting ready to check the 60 turtle nests that they have this year. Truly amazing. Up from 20 nests last year.

Mr. Pinckney,
Again you strike the plangent chord. If there is a more important writer in South Carolina, I don’t know who it is. Life is short. Write more.

What a beautiful story. I grew up on the gulf coast - near Padre Island where i spent a lot of time, walking and watching, in the 40s and 50s. My grandmother was an environmental activist in those days and helped with the founding of the Aransas Wildlife Refuge that sheltered the last of the disappearing Whooping Cranes. I learned so much there and I feel as you do when you yearn for what we have lost. I honor that you are still keeping the faith. I keep doing what I can at http://goodwordswan.wildflowerstew.com while I’m working on a book. Thank you again for this lovely article.

Very nice story, I love that area myself.
Just wish it could have been told with a bit less smug self-righteousness.
You won’t get so much support by insulting people.
What a treat! A visit to Daufuskie! Thank you.
