Thank you so much for the wonderful article! I’m originally from Charleston and that sure did make homesick. I look forward to reading other stories of yours.

Ahh Caretta caretta, the species that single flippered my major from Botany to Marine Biology after a summer spent on Cape Lookout, nest watching and shell measuring.
I was taken back to basking naked in the night glow of microscopic sea creatures and my 1am -5am beach patrols. Not so many Loggerheads as ghost crabs up on Lookout and they’d try to take on the 3 wheeled honda I rode, I knew it wasn’t right but I liked the crunching sounds the ghost crabs made…
We had a rescue night of babies too, when they went for the light house instead of the ocean. I gathered them up in the front of my shirt and took them to water.
Now I’m living far away from the turtles, in Alaska, I made it. Sure was fun remembering the warmth, that even a damned Yankee can appreciate.

Such a vivid telling, makes me wish the Gullah could conjure some good juju voodoo and wipe the slate clean, reclaim the island that lives in this magical telling of the island beneath the turtle moon.
Roger, thanks again for a few minutes of Daufuskie. I always enjoy reading anything that takes me back there. I just sent a copy of Right Side of the River to a Citadel classmate in Iraq. He is a lowcountry boy that misses home. I figured we could get his mind home for a bit until we can get his feet back in good ol ‘SC. Thanks again and give Ms. Susan a hello for me. Andy
