Discuss: Ricekeepers

For as long as they can remember, the Ojibwe of the upper Midwest have been harvesting wild rice from sacred places. It is wrong, they say, for corporations and universities to try to patent this food, and dangerous to the Ojibwe and their culture to undertake genetic research on it. Read Winona LaDuke's article here about their fight to keep wild rice wild, and tell us what you think. Is wild rice, ultimately, the Ojibwe's?

While searching for the origins of wild rice, I chanced upon this article. It is perfect timing since it is Thanksgiving in the U.S. which means in reality we should use this holiday to celebrate our native peoples, our own cultures, our own families.

I don’t know who Ryan is or who he works for, but food is not “just food”. There is Thai, Indian, Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, French, Algerian, Moroccan, Greek, Lebanese, etc. Some of us are lucky to try some of these in their places of origins. Definitely different when made elsewhere. Food is location and culturally specific.

Just because Man thinks he knows what he’s doing, he inevitably makes a mess. We’ve just begun learning about genes and messing around with our food supply is just stupid. Finally, food without nutrients is almost useless. Industrial farming is pretty expert at making low-quality, low nutrient food.

I am way behind time on reading this but still wanted to comment.
Like most of you I found the story deeply moving.  I also found the discussion deeply moving.  There are those who think of food like Ryan.  And then there are the rest of us.  We are, at least worried, if not terrified, of the rampant destruction of biodiversity by big ag and big pharma - big business in general.  Every word that is printed like this article needs to be on the front page of every newspaper in the world until people finally wake up the fact that we are doing massive, possibly irreversible, damage to our food supply.  You can bet “they” won’t quit, therefore “we” must keep telling the storyl
