Thank you for writing this important article. I don’t know how anyone could continue being pro horse slaughter after reading what happens to the horses.

This was one of e most graceful articles I have read that deal with the hideous reality of horse slaughter for human consumption. I have seen most of the pictures you describe in the article. I have seen the disgusting videos that you also describe; but I was so much more touched by the sheer human/humane feelings that you addressed that for the first time in a long time I cried. I hate to say I am becoming inured to the horror of the slaughter house world; but I guess after watching your one hundredth video, something slows down or maybe it’s more like a combat veteran with PTSD. This article with all the human touchs and feelings had more of an impact on me than the videos I have watched lately. I am going to share this article and plead ith people to take the time and read it because I still want to believe in humanity; and if it takes this gentle touch to wake people up then hey YES. Thank you for being so loving in a world where true horror exists. I will carry the picture of th braided horse with me for a long time. Thanks again
Your comrade in arms against horse slaughter…....

By far the most comprehensive and articulate article I have ever read on horse slaughter, kill buyers and the kill auctions themselves. Nothing has changed since the article was written in fact it sounds like it was yesterday. We as humans and Americans should be so ashamed that it still goes on. We can stop it but it will take ALL of us to do it. Please call your legislators. download this article or send them a link to it. Our horses deserve so much more from us after their service to us our children and our country. Urge your State to ban the sale and transport of horses to slaughter.

Carol - Thanks for the idea of sending a link to this article to our legislators. While probably only an aide might read it, at least we’re spreading the word against what is happening in some states, e.g. Missouri, Oregon, Tennessee, New Mexico and could continue even while legislation is put on the back burner.
Who knows, this horrible action against our horses may spread to all states.

I highly recommend this Audubon article as a followup to this piece:

Anon - your article is unadulterated Bolshoi, factually wrong and lets everyone know how you think.
There is plenty of evidence that equines did not die out on the continent where they evolved. You obviously have an agenda.

Yes, I hope it does show how I think: rationally and carefully. I am a long-time reader of both Orion and Audubon. I have no “agenda” or personal connection to anything related to either article. I’m simply a person with a brain and the ability to use it. So are you all.
I found the Orion article to be very compelling, but also very one-sided. The Audubon article explains the other side: 1) Horses are extremely ecologically destructive, and 2) we have nowhere near the resources to care for the massive overpopulation of wild and domestic horses in this country.
Consider all the angles, folks. Educative yourselves. That’s what democracy is all about.
It’s so good the Spanish do not consume horse meat; we don’t either in the U.S. Some of our unfortunate horses do get sent to Canada or Mexico though. People just use them and when they are through, the horse is expendable. Hopefully, this will stop.
