The idea that we can destroy the whole structure of civilization and expect that somehow this will result in an Eden-like aboriginal paradise is among the more bizarre delusions that the impending disasters we are faced with has spawned. Otherwise intelligent people have unthinkingly bought into this fantasy to console themselves and nourish some hopes for the future. It makes you think of the unfortunate folks who sought refuge on the Hale Bopp comet. These people deserve our compassion and understanding, but not our agreement and complicity in their erroneous thinking.
What they fail to recognize is that in spite of it’s grievous shortcomings, civilization has also some wonderful gifts to bestow, without which we will be truly up the creek. I am not going to enumerate these blessings. If you can’t think of any yourself, then maybe you should book a ticket on the next comet….

Dear Vera,
Perhaps the time for raising awareness is close at hand…

Dear Vera,
Perhaps the raising of collective awareness is as close at hand as tomorrow’s dawn, but between now and then we need more voices, many more voices speaking out loudly, clearly and often.

I have no desire to encourage babblery. Steve keeps saying the same thing over and over like an incantation, and when asked a hard question, has nothing to say.
Steve, get over your fixation on the elites. The real action is here, amongst us. You know… Folks like us, looking toward each other for solutions rather than to Washington and other power centers.

Dear Vera,
Perhaps I am too old and set in my ways, but there is nothing in my advocacy that I feel any need to defend. Your consistent objections begin to sound like a refrain. They are reminders to me that some value could be derived by others from what I am doing.
If I find that you ever agree with me about matters of substance, such agreement will be a signal for me to carefully review my perspective.
Sincerely,
Steve
