Rethinking Nature Literacy
A commentator on the radio program Living on Earth recently traded away many of her family’s digital entertainment devices for binoculars and outdoor art supplies, and devised great hikes for her reluctant suburban kids. Soon, her son had requested that his seventh birthday party take place on top of a favorite mountain, and the cake itself was shaped like a peak.
What a great, if atypical, story that is. These days, many of us are more familiar with what’s on TV than with what’s crawling, growing, and flying just beyond our windows. How can we follow that mother’s lead and reconnect with those wild things—and with the imagination, love, and sense of orientation such connection brings? What’s required of us as adults? As parents? As a culture?
As always, Orion welcomes your thoughts, stories, and comments. What are you doing to reconnect yourself or your family to the rhythms of the wild world?
