Paul Kingsnorth on the Story of Civilization

Between globalization, technological advance, and ecological crisis, humans are living through a time of nearly unprecedented change. For centuries, many of us have told a particular story about the nature and direction of that change—but what if that story is wrong, even dangerous? Orion editor Helen Whybrow speaks with Paul Kingsnorth about what new stories may emerge amid upheaval, and how they may have something in common with very old ones. Kingsnorth’s essay on the subject, “The Axis and the Sycamore,” appears in the January/February 2017 issue of the magazine.

Paul Kingsnorth is the author of several books, including Savage Gods, Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist and Other Essays, and Alexandria.
